I changed my mind: I'll pay for MT!
June 7th, 2004
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know… I said they didn’t get it when it came to licensing, and that I didn’t see any option that would leave me feeling fine.
But I changed my mind. Two things made me reconsider my position.
First: SixApart’s response to the outcry. An open question, a mea culpa from Anil, and a we’re fixing it from Mena.
I still believe they made many mistakes with the licensing, but now they showed me they had no ill will and they are willing to fix the problems. I was complaining about “License 0.9 beta 1” and they said they’ll do at least one “bug fix release”. That’s a good thing. It gives me hope.
That still leaves me with a “propietary” solution. And while I love open source as much as anyone, I recognize value when I see it and I’m willing to pay for it. It’s just a matter of knowing what you’re getting into.
And that brings me to the second reason: I couldn’t find a reasonable solution to my problems. This doesn’t mean that MT is better than anything out there. It just means that it fits my problems best. Or that I’ve transformed my problems into something that can be solved better with MT. In either case, I’m better off with MT and I’ve discovered that moving to something else would mean too much work and too many changes.
So MT is valuable enough for me to pay the $70 or so “introductory price”, and to asume the risk that 6A will do “the right thing” in the future.
I’ll keep investing in the community, since it looks like the community will grow strong and I see plenty of value in that. In fact, I plan to submit something I’m working on to the Plugin Developer Contest. Let’s see if I can win that Dual G5 with 23”; that would definetly change my mind about 6A ;-).
There, I said it: I was wrong. I’ll keep using MT and I’ll pay for it. I know what I am getting into and it is worth my time and money.

January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM Thanks for giving us a chance and being patient. I think you'll be even happier with the direction we're heading.
January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM I think MT is still ahead of some open source CMS systems, like WP. Thats why I think is still a small price to pay, any way who said it was evil to pay for good software.
