What if...

What if I started to write in english here in zonageek? Afrael is doing just that, but he has only posted once so far. And despacio does it with simultaneous translation.
I’m not sure if it will be too weird, or too much, or not enough… not enough spanish to please the spanish speakers, and not enough english to please the non-speakers.
Perhaps I should do a separate blog in english? But then, more questions… should I write about the same things? Just translate my posts? Would I have enough blogging energy to keep two blogs at the same time?
I don’t know… I guess for the time being I’ll post in english every now and then, just to see how it feels.

Bueh, eso me pasa por tener amigos de mi pais (Brasil) que reclaman si escribo en otros idiomas... amigos en España/Argentina que reclaman si NO escribo en Español... y amigos de demás lugares que sólo entienden el inglés...! Hay que agradar al publico. Hehe :o)

January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM To me, reading Sebastian's blog in particular has something to do with the fact that we both spent our younger years in Caracas and know the same people back home. Reading it in spanish allows me to echo what I read in my head in a venezuelan-sounding voice, which undoubtedly helps me relate a bit more to his less technical blurbs - even a purist will admit that english is the defacto lingua franca for anything tech (except maybe the french, but that's another subject). I speak to my wife, who is also venezuelan, in spanish every day. In other words, to me, spanish is more personal. I speak, read and write tons of english every day, it's what I do at work, and it runs the gamut from highly technical to mundane things. I understand it and dominate it completely, but I also approach it with a different mindset - I have to be ready for more kinds of messages when reading english - there are more variables to interpret about the source of the message. In spanish, I think I can cut down on that number of unknowns, which makes it more.. leisurely, perhaps, but certainly more personal. That said, if you decide to go english for good, more power to you, and your reasons certainly make sense... but I really, REALLY don't think spanglish is a good idea. Actually, that's understating it... Spanglish is the spawn of the devil. Just say no, kids.
January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM Ya que es un post bilingue... (english mode) Some time ago I had the same interest conflict - that of "having a bigger audience" and all that. Later on, for practical reasons I decided to have my site's "root" section geared to english-speakers, and leave the blog subsection in Spanish. Sometimes I have had ideas for posts that might "sound better" in English, but I prefer not to make my blog a Spanglish one. In your case, while I might still enjoy your read in English, after years of using Spanish the perception is a little shocking, like something "alien" you are not used to expect. If I ever think about bringing English to a blog in the future, it might be in a completely separated manner - different site, different topics, different everything. But I simply don't have time for that now so those English chaps will have to settle for Babelfish for the time being :)
January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM Bueno, yo también escribo en inglés, en otro(s) blog(s), supongo que la base es tu audiencia, y no creo que se puedan mezclar muy bien. Si quieres atraer gente que habla inglés, publica en inglés. Creo que habemos más "hispanoparlantes" que también entendemos inglés, que angloparlantes que entiendan español, por lo que escribir solo en inglés tal vez te supondría una pérdida de audiencia mucho menor con una posible ganancia mucho mayor. ¿Pero mixto? no me parece atractivo.
January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM Bueno, ya lo ha escrito todo sobre nuestro blog M. Claro que hay cosas intraducibles de uno a otro idioma...pero ahi esta justo la gracia, es un coñazo, pero a veces te ries leyendo la traduccion directa que nos ha salido porque era tarde y le cerebro no daba para dos idiomas a la vez....yo creo que lo divertido es escribir cada vez en el idioma que te salga...seguro que hasta habra alguno al que un dia le de por postear en fraces, aleman... Besos, lou! Ok, M wrote everything about our blog. Of course somethings are just impossible to translate...(comos e dice coñazo en ingles???), but that just the funny point: to read some days shat we tried to wrote late at night in both languages when we simply couldn´t think any more in one of them....I think that we should just write how we feel it each time...some may even post in french, german....
January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM yo empeze mi blog en español. por alla en septiembre del 2002 (uff). y estube asi un tiempo. era bastante problematico de muchas maneras. hay muchos bloggers hispanos que dominan el ingles y se sentian casi ofendidos, al igual que algunos familiares y amigos, les resultaba dificil entender que yo hiciera mi blog en ingles, la principal razon para hacerlo asi era por que tenia varios amigos que no entendian español y soo me solia comunicar via web con ellos. creo que es un asunto mas de contexto que de eleccion. yo te vi (sebas) en el mapa de la blogsfera hispana, creo que no se puede representar a la blogsfera hispana escribiendo en ingles, mas bien pasariamos a formar parte de la blogsfera en ingles. no tengo nada en contra de que alguien que habla español haga su blog en ingles, yo lo hize durante mucho tiempo, luego intente tener uno en español y otro en ingles con contenido distinto y ahora lo que hago es mantener uno solo en español. si bien es cierto que las traducciones se tornan imposibles, ya uqe como decia ernex hay cosas que sencillamente son intraducibles, creo que es la unica manera de poder realmente complacer a los dos publicos. finalmente, este tiempo que he estado haciendo el blog en español he podido disfrutar de aquellas cosas que veia en los blogs en español y que nunca podia hacer, ehm, cosas como comentar el miss venezuela en español, con expresiones tipicas de nuestra tierra, si bien es cierto de que la gran mayoria de nosotros ahora esta fuera de venezuela y nos hemos acoplado a otras costumbres y hablamos otro idioma en nuestro dia a dia, y que esto influye en nuestra manera de sentir, creo que la unica manera de conservar ese patrimonio es haciendo el blog en español. imaginense dentro de 3 años todos los blogs en ingles, habremos perdido esa peculiaridad de escribir en español. bueno, eso si, si se van a pasar todos a blogear en ingles me avisan y yo tambien lo hago, no me dejan fuera :P
January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM Pues si...creo que la traducción simultánea requiere el doble de esfuerzo, es evidente, y que nunca te qudan las dos parets del post iguales, pero ahí está la graca, el "spanglish" es una guarrería que por desgracia la habla ya demasiada gente, así que por nosotros, las guarradas a la basura...además, lo del inglés no es solo por la audiencia sajona, también por los holandeses, franceses, italianos, alemanes... Well...of course simultaneous translation is doubble effort, and keeps both sides of each post slightly independent, each one with it's own bouquet...but "spanglish" sucks and nowadays already too many people speak it, so to hell with spanglish...and even with that in mind, english is not only for saxon people, it's also for French, Dutch, German, Italian... BTW Sebas you wiped out our beloved parenthesis! Keep up! Double posts rulez!

January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM Yeah Buddy !!! Lets start the trend. I also thought the same thing, two blogs, different posts, comments.... Nahhh too much effort and so little time. So I'll just do a spanglish thing for now... But onw thing I did think about was letting the user pick in which language the user wants the info on the right hand side... with php, includes and cookies is a piece of cake. Keep it up !!!
January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM Yah why not? I do have to read it everyday on my daily web ride, and you guys have to speak it and maybe even write it on a daily basis. The thing with the two-language blog idea is that you can't always express the exact same thing on spanish and then just translate it to english, sometimes it work sometimes it doesn't, dunno maybe it's just me ;)

January 31st, 2008 09:06 AM I do want a larger audience :-)... and I have some english speaking friends I would like to have as readers. And I also think it would be a good exercise to write in english more often in a context a little less technical than work.
