A simple script to change the playback rate of a movie in QuickTime.

Download QuickerTime-1.0.scpt. A simple script to change the playback rate of a movie in QuickTime

(Note, this script is only for Mac OS X & QuickTime 7)

WHAT IS THIS FOR?

QuickTime 7 lets you change the playback rate of a movie, playing it faster or slower than normal. That’s nothing new. What’s new is the fact that the audio pitch is not affected. That means that playing a movie twice as fast will not result in “Chipmunks, the movie” but rather in something that looks and sounds just as the original movie.

If you play it too fast, it’s hard to understand dialogs, but if you play it just slightly faster you can barely notice the difference while saving some of your precious time.

I’ve found that at 1.15 times, the effect is almost imperceptible, while at 1.20 times it is obvious but tolerable. You will probably have to experiment to find the rate that works for you,

USAGE

  • Copy this file to ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Quicktime Player.
  • Enable the “Script Menu” using the AppleScript Utility available inside the AppleScript folder of your Applications folder. Make sure to also enable the “Show Library Scripts” option.
  • Open a movie in QuickTime.
  • Select the “QuickerTime” script from the Script Menu.
  • Enter the rate you want to see the movie at. The value displayed by default corresponds to the current rate.
